Low and Slow: How The Entrepreneur’s Journey Is a Lot Like Your Mama’s Pot RoastOlivia Katulka
I like to believe that I am a good cook when it comes to family dinners around the kitchen table. When you grow up in a home with both a mom and a dad who can cook a mean, hearty meal, it’s hard to admit your culinary skills may be sub par – I guess I just thought it would be hereditary.
There have been a good number of occasions when my dishes didn’t turn out how I expected. Don’t even get me started on a good pot roast – I have a love/hate relationship with that hunk of beef.
Whenever my mashed potatoes come out just short of my mom’s carbolicious masterpiece, or my pot roast winds up dry, you can find me – thumbs twiddling – on Google looking for where I went awry.
- Why is my pot roast dry?
- Why is my pot roast tough?
- Why can’t my mom just cook for me and kick her out when my dinner guests arrive?
I really have a tough time with that dish and I’ve learned a few things along the way after scoping out many of Google’s search engine results pages.
Although I may find cooking a pot roast to be the bane of my existence, let’s look at something that’s even more difficult – building a business. I know, I know. I just took you from the kitchen, and launched you into the conference room, but bear with me. A lot of us use our search engines of choice to figure out how to do things the right way. Honestly, how many times have you typed “how to” into the search bar? We rely on the world wide web to answer all of our questions and solve all of our problems.
Burn the Entrepreneur Quotes
Growing your business doesn’t always turn out the way you planned. There are bumps in the road and financial hurdles to conquer no matter how big or how small you are. A lot of small business owners turn to the internet as a resource when they start to feel they are losing momentum – or control.
Entrepreneur quotes may spark a fire of motivation, and reading up on successful entrepreneur stories may set a resourceful guideline – but will they solve the problems your business is facing?
For instance, Forbes released a list of the “Top 32 Quotes Every Entrepreneur Should Live By” in May of 2013, and it includes a statement given by John C. Maxwell, a leadership expert and renowned author:
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”
Although we can all agree that leaders are, in fact, the ones who do all of these things, what about what comes before all of this – finding the way. I guess he didn’t include it because it didn’t rhyme with the other three verbs.
This quote, in particular, is directed towards leaders who are confident in their accomplishments and strive to get others the same success. If that isn’t you, you have to be careful.
The last thing you want to do is believe you have the answers and “know the way,” when in reality you’re still trying to find it.
Another example is a statement taken from Peter Drucker, an author who is influential on the subject of management theory:
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
While this blip of encouragement is true, it really doesn’t focus on how you created said future, which is the most important part. This entrepreneur quote makes me believe that whatever I want my future to be, can happen with hard work – that’s empowering. Realizing that life is never that simple and the hard work doesn’t come easy – now that’s sobering.
Let’s go back to my pot roast for a minute. Here’s a cooking quote I found on Relish taken from Julia Child:
“Cooking well doesn’t mean cooking fancy.”
Although that is pretty encouraging, it doesn’t help my situation – I’m not trying to nail Gordon Ramsay’s Foie Gras with Caramelized Apples. I’m still trying to nail the basics – a pot roast.
A small business owner who is looking for entrepreneurial growth shouldn’t go looking for motivational quotes to get them through a rough patch – they should be evaluating their cash flow and business conflicts and making a plan.
Unfortunately, you can’t find that plan online either – your business dictates that.
As the business owner, it is up to you to find out what the best course of action is when striving towards entrepreneurial growth. If you want some real motivation, rather than looking online for business owner quotes – look in the mirror. Remember why you started your business and figure out what you have to do to achieve the success you want.
Entrepreneurial Growth: Reach for the Sky, Not for Answers
Small business owners also google the stories of well-known business tycoons when looking for small business support. If you knew Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos’ entrepreneur journey, then the track to business success would be laid out for you.
For instance, what did Steve Jobs do to make Apple what it is today? Well, if you haven’t seen the movie – he got fired.
Searching the internet to find the answers to where you went wrong may give you temporary relief, however, googling “entrepreneur journey” won’t solve any your business woes.
Let’s just assume Google’s results informed you that a power struggle with your co-founders would help you achieve success – would you provoke it? Of course you wouldn’t, that would be irrational.
But that is exactly how it went down for Apple’s former CEO. Although it left Jobs to find other options for over a decade, his firing is what made Apple the multinational technology company that is known worldwide.
More importantly – his termination is the reason we have movies like Toy Story.
Just a side note.
Now before you go looking for ways to get fired, this doesn’t mean it will work for you. This wasn’t in Steve Jobs’ plans either. Jobs was a man who was able to adapt to the unexpected and make the most out of every opportunity.
No matter whose story you find online, following their exact footsteps will not ensure a successful business. The best resource for a struggling entrepreneur is themselves. Businesses come from many industries and are started by different people. The background of each business is different – that is why each business has specific requirements when it comes to reaching success.
As for my pot roast – I can’t go and find any recipe online and expect it to come out looking like Ree Drummond’s from The Pioneer Woman. I could follow her recipe down to the details:
- Perfectly marbled piece of chuck roast
- All necessary seasonings for flavor
- Include complimentary vegetables
- Cook it at the right heat and for the right amount of time
But every kitchen is different. As for my kitchen, mine comes with an oven that was installed when Nixon was in office. When it comes to a Food Network Star like Ree Drummond, she has the most efficient, up-to-date appliances.
So when she tells me to cook my pot roast at 275 degrees F for four hours, my Watergate kitchen appliance may not be so precise in temperature. If it is 100 degrees F too hot, it will definitely dry out.
Do you want to know how long it took me to figure out my that oven was 100 degrees F off?
A long time – close to three years to be exact.
I’ve followed every recipe, but no matter what I did, my results were never right. Once I stopped looking at what others did and reacted to my results instead, I found my answers much faster than any search engine.
Small Business Support Served on a Silver Platter
The one thing that could solve all of my pot roast conundrums is a new oven. But that’s not always available with the lack of funds in my checking account. Maybe you are facing the same predicament.
Business opportunities are something that you can’t give up. Any chance you get to grow and improve your business is one to take advantage of.
